Objectif officiel

This intervention, led by the French NGO GERES supplies renewable energy for small-scale enterprise in rural areas that are not covered by the national grid. GERES has requested support of 66.3 MSEK to scale up a model they have already installed in three villages to another 5 and at the same time prepare for larger scaling up. Local authorities contribute with land. A private operator will handle maintenance and billing. The main objective is to improve access to renewable energy in the Sikasso, Ségou and Kayes regions by producing renewable productive (generating employment and income) energy, thereby contributing to economic and social development as well as stability in rural Mali. There are three specific objectives: 1) Improve capacity to produce renewable energy and put it to productive use based on needs of local people. 2) Strengthen the capacity of local actors and improve their economic resilience, promote inclusion and improved living conditions. 3) Establish conditions for sustainable management of green business areas with social enterprise and mobilisation of resources for its funding. The intervention is contributing to all three priorities in Mali's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC): energy, forestry/land use change and agriculture (the first two more than the third).
