Objectif officiel

The goal of this project is to design and synthetize a novel class of photocatalytic materials capable of efficient solar energy storage in terms of splitting of water and/or converting carbon dioxide and water vapor into hydrocarbon fuels using sunlight. Improvements of photocatalytic properties will be accomplished by the selective crystallization of immobilized nanoparticles of photcatalysts such as TiO2, WO3, Fe2O3, and MoO3 in the phosphate glassy-matrix of AO-C2O3-TiO2-MO3-P2O5 (A=Ca, Ba, Sn, Zn; C=Al, Fe; M= Mo, W). The crystallization of catalysts will be facilitated by the application of laser heating. The structure and properties of synthesized hybrid materials will be characterized by a range of micro-analytical techniques, including, for example, micro-Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction, and complemented by Monte Carlo simulations. The proposed cross-disciplinary research involves chemists and mineralogists from three universities in Morocco and Sweden. The newly developed phosphate-based glass-ceramics will be of interest for industrial and scientific communities since it will represent environmentally friendly absorbers of light and/or heat. Use of low-cost and abundant precursors such as apatite minerals and Moroccan natural phosphates for their synthesis will further increase attractiveness of these new materials.
