SWE-2011-66 Water resources effects of land-water management in Tanzania, Africa

The goal of this project is to model the hydrological impacts of land-water management on water resources in Tanzania. This will aid development by making it possible to quantify future impacts of various management strategies on water resources. The project will focus on the Kilombero Valley (KV) of central Tanzania as an important and representative case study. Characterization of the current water resources conditions will be carried out using hydrologic tracer techniques. Information regarding the distribution of flow pathways and groundwater recharge derived from these investigations will be used to constrain process-based hydrologic modelling such that it is relevant for conditions occurring in KV and similar regions. This provides a tool to aid development in Tanzania capable of quantifying impacts of various land-water management strategies under potential climatic changes.
