SWE-2012-103: Quantifying the Emission Sources of Health and Climate Affecting Black Carbon in Tanzanian Air

African climate is warming faster than the global average. Emissions of black carbon air particles contribute to this warming and also impair human respiratory health. A major uncertainty regarding climate and air quality aspects of these particles is the current lack of knowledge regarding emission sources. In collaboration with Ardhi University we propose to examine the sources in of these particles in Tanzanian air at an urban site in Dar es-Salam and at a regional site near Mt Kilimanjaro. These two sites allow differentiation between local urban emissions and the regional background levels. Chemical and isotopic analysis of the samples, such as 14C, will differentiate between major emission sources, including biomass vs fossil contributions. This information provides a scientific framework that can help guide society in policy decision/strategies to decrease key emission sources.
