Enhance access to solar powered irrigation systems for smallholder farmers through innovative financial schemes

Objectif officiel

This project aims to address the critical need for reliable water supply for smallholder farmers (SHFs) to enhance their productivity and improve livelihoods. Though utilisation of a solar-powered irrigation system proved to address the need for reliable water supply, the high upfront cost of the system hindered the uptake of Solar Water Pump (SWP) market at SHF level. Access to consumers loan plays key role to support SHF to benefit from the SWP technology. However, Financial Institutions (Fis) are not convinced to include the SWP irrigation system loan product in their financial scheme as the SWP market is not yet well developed. Moreover, the availability of SWP is questioned as the suppliers are facing severe shortage of foreign currency to import the products.This innovation project seeks to address the accessibility and affordability of SWP irrigation system through innovative tailored financial mechanisms to address the challenges from both supply and demand side.
