Market study nexus water-hydrogen South African contribution

The combi-track "Green Hydrogen" (GH2) aims to catalyse the development of GH2 economies in Namibia and South Africa. On GH2, several studies have been executed, including on Dutch propositions for Namibia and South Africa. For both propositions, the water-Green Hydrogen nexus are identified as areas for cooperation. This study is a follow-up of this identification.The water needed for GH2 production, cannot come from fresh water sources. These sources are already under pressure and needed for domestic consumption, agriculture and industrial use, as well as for keeping ecosystems healthy. Therefore, there is a need to look at other water sources for GH2 production. Options to further explore are desalination of seawater, the use of water from waste water treatments, or the purification of acid mine water.Currently, there is a lack of information about the benefits and costs of these three options, where potential projects can be developed to produce water from these sources that can be used for GH2 production, and Dutch technology, innovation and interest that can be matched to opportunities in Namibia and South Africa.The three objectives this proposed project relates to are:Position the Netherlands as a significant partner in the move towards that economy and ecosystem, creating opportunities for Dutch businesses and innovations in the whole value chain, while making progress on development, sustainability and the climate agenda.Partner up with Namibia and South Africa to address their challenges and boost implementation of their plans on GH2.Build and boost skills development initiatives with Dutch knowledge and technology.
