Objectif officiel

The 35 MW OrPower Menengai Geothermal Power Project is a private-sector renewable energy project in Kenya involving the design, construction, operation and maintenance of a modular geothermal power plant in the Menengai geothermal field, Nakuru County, approximately 180 km northwest of Nairobi. The project also includes the construction of an on-site substation and a 500-metre transmission interconnector linking the plant to the Menengai substation. The project will be implemented under a Build, Own and Operate (BOO) model by OrPower Twenty-Two Limited (OTTL), a Kenyan special-purpose vehicle wholly owned by Kaishan Renewable Energy Limited. OTTL holds a 25-year take-or-pay Power Purchase Agreement with Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) and a Project Implementation and Steam Supply Agreement with the Geothermal Development Company (GDC). The total project cost is estimated at USD 91.9 million. Senior debt of up to USD 64.4 million is expected to be jointly provided by the African Development Bank and the International Finance Corporation, with IFC acting as mandated lead arranger. The African Development Bank will provide a senior secured loan of up to USD 16.5 million. The project complements the Bank’s earlier investment of USD 145 million in the development of the Menengai geothermal steam field.
