STRENGTHENING AND REHABILITATION OF AN ELEVATED RAIL TRANSIT LINE STEEL STRUCTURE WHILE MAINTAINING COMMUTER TRAFFIC

This paper briefly describes a project that has achieved, for the first time in this country, a major structural rehabilitation of an elevated two track mass transit line while maintaining a large daily commuter traffic volume of 100,000 passengers. To accommodate this volume, six-car trains operate every two minutes during peak commuting periods. This extensive rehabilitation under heavy traffic is being accomplished by using unique, innovative and challenging design and construction techniques. The project is in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and is known as the Frankford Elevated Reconstruction Project.
