Fixes #7902 via PR #7903 (by @copilot-swe-agent) 🐛 Bug Fixes run no longer crashes with 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'get_hexsha' when the command creates a commit in a subdataset reached through an ordinary directory (e.g. dataset/plaindir//subds). Saving such a result treated plaindirs as datasets, and caused the outer datalad commit to fail. Introduced with the new datalad run behavior in PR #7821. Via PR #7904 (by @asmacdo) rerun now fails the same way as run: it does not re-execute a command whose inputs could not be obtained, and does not save the results of a re-execution whose exit code differs from the recorded one. Also documents how the recorded exit code is handled by both commands. PR #7906 (by @yarikoptic) Command output that is not valid in the preferred encoding no longer fails the command. WitlessProtocol._prepare_result() decoded the captured stdout/stderr strictly, so a single undecodable byte raised UnicodeDecodeError -- and, since that happens while assembling the result, discarded the very output needed to diagnose it. A mere libmagic warning on stderr (as emitted by the copy bundled with git-annex when its magic database does not match) was enough to abort an unrelated git annex get. Output is now decoded with surrogateescape, keeping such bytes recoverable via .encode(encoding, 'surrogateescape'), the way Python itself handles undecodable file names. Via PR #7924
