Infusing Spiritual and Religious Competencies into Graduate-Level Coursework on Serious Mental Illness

Abstract Spirituality and religion (S/R) are often intertwined with development, phenomenology, and the course of mental disorders. A substantial evidence base affirms that S/R can be: (1) beneficial to clients’ mental health, offering solace, hope, and/or a sense of connection; (2) a source of struggle that exacerbates their mental health challenges, such as excessive guilt or anger toward God; and (3) influence the presentation or nature or symptoms, such as religious psychotic delusions, hyper-religious mania, or scrupulosity. Spirituality and religion can be particularly relevant for clients who suffer from severe mental illnesses, including psychosis spectrum disorders and bipolar disorders. As such, this chapter offers guidance for faculty instructors and supervisors who want to teach students about the complex relationships between these disorders and S/R in ways that will enhance competence to work with clients with such presenting concerns.
