A curated and standardised dataset of flight metrics for Iberian steppe birds

This dataset provides standardised flight metrics and associated GPS-derived data products for five Iberian steppe bird species: Little Bustard (Tetrax tetrax), Great Bustard (Otis tarda), Stone-curlew (Burhinus oedicnemus), Pin-tailed Sandgrouse (Pterocles alchata) and Black-bellied Sandgrouse (Pterocles orientalis). The dataset was derived from GPS tracking of 175 individuals monitored in Spain and Portugal between 2021 and 2026 using different device brands, models, sampling schedules and acquisition modes. The data were processed through a common workflow to identify high-frequency flight events, standardise movement records to comparable 30-min sequences, classify movement states, estimate corrected flight distance, derive flight height above ground and characterise vertical GPS error. The archive contains harmonised multi-species summary tables and species-level datasets describing boost flights, movement sequences and flight-height records. Flight-height products are restricted to Spain because the digital terrain model used to derive height above ground covered Spanish territory only. Geographic coordinates are not included in the published dataset. A complete description of the files, variables, units, categories and derivations is provided in Data_dictionary.csv. The dataset accompanies the Scientific Data Data Descriptor “A curated and standardised dataset of flight metrics for Iberian steppe birds”.
