Assessment of Professionalism among Dental Students in Southern of Iran

Background: Professionalism is recognized as a critically important component in healthcare professions. Therefore, the present study was conducted to determine the professionalism score among dental students. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 135 dental students of Bushehr University of Medical Sciences in the academic year 2021. Data were collected using a demographic information form and the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) professionalism assessment questionnaire. The collected data were then analyzed using SPSS statistical software, version 25. Results: The mean professionalism score of dental students was 171.01±20.96. Regarding the overall level of professionalism, 3.0% of students demonstrated poor professionalism, 58.5% moderate professionalism, 29.6% good professionalism, and 8.9% excellent professionalism. Among the assessed domains, the highest mean score was observed in integrity, while the lowest scores were found in responsibility and fairness. There was no significant association between professionalism score and students’ academic year gender, indigenousness and household socioeconomic. However, a statistically significant association was observed between the subjective social class index and professionalism score and age. Conclusion: Overall, professionalism levels were generally moderate, indicating a need for further improvement. While household SES was not significantly associated with professionalism, subjective social class was significantly related to professionalism scores, suggesting that perceived social position may influence professional attitudes among dental students.
