Data and code for Eavesdropping on Canada's Fisheries with Passive Acoustic Monitoring. Passive acoustic monitoring (i.e., listening to sounds) can provide insights into sound-producing fish populations; reduce reliance on invasive sampling methods; and increase the spatial and temporal coverage of monitoring efforts. Questions nonetheless remain about the utility of passive acoustics for fisheries management. We summarized the current state of knowledge on soniferous fished species in Canada, evaluated passive acoustics' ability to inform fisheries management, and identified steps to bridge the gap between its current limited use and its full potential. We found 96 Canadian fished species known to produce active (i.e., intentional) sounds that could provide fisheries-relevant information related to species distribution, reproduction, growth, sex, and trophic ecology. Despite this diversity of species and applications, to our knowledge, no Canadian fish species are regularly monitored using their sounds. To address this research-practice gap, we created a fisheries-specific sound production catalogue and a series of educational workshops for a range of target audiences. Although our analysis focused on Canada’s fisheries, the broader research findings and identified actions are relevant to facilitating passive acoustic monitoring applications worldwide.
