A new species of the genus Trechiama Jeannel, 1927 (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Trechinae), Trechiama (Trechiama) nica sp. nov., is described from the mesovoid shallow substratum of northern Fukui Prefecture, central Japan. This new species belongs to the T. ohshimai species-group based on morphological features and is most similar to T. hiroyukii Uéno, 2001 but can be distinguished by a combination of morphological features: a narrower and more strongly posteriorly-constricted pronotum, as well as diagnostic differences in the male genitalia, particularly the presence of a copulatory piece. Mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences were obtained from the new species and eight species belonging to Trechiama. The lowest interspecific COI pairwise distance was 2.28%, and the distance between T. nica and T. hiroyukii was 2.58%.
