The Living Lab guidelines document (WoodStock Deliverable D1.1) provides a shared methodological foundation and strategic orientation for all six Living Labs involved in the WoodStock project. It is designed as a flexible yet coherent framework to guide the planning, execution, and evaluation of co-creation activities across diverse local contexts. WoodStock operates at the intersection of architecture, material innovation, and citizen engagement, with a particular focus on underutilised and under-valued wood products as sustainable and culturally meaningful materials. In line with the New European Bauhaus (NEB) values of sustainability, inclusiveness, and aesthetics, this project mobilises six Living Labs as real-world platforms for participatory experimentation. Recognising the diversity of local ecosystems, this document offers a flexible toolbox of co-creation methods, ethical protocols, and activity design templates that each Living Lab can adapt to its own stakeholders, resources, and territorial challenges—while maintaining overall project coherence. The guidelines articulate a clear pathway from the initial research brief, through stakeholder mapping and inclusive recruitment, to the design and facilitation of co-creation activities, and post-activity evaluation. Several tested co-creation methods are detailed, providing both step-by-step instructions and critical reflections on their strengths and limitations. This diversity of participatory methods enables Living Labs to make context-sensitive choices while contributing to a shared research narrative. One of the imperatives of this document is to address and insist upon ethical considerations, such as ensuring safe participation, managing conflicts, and handling co-created knowledge and personal data. It outlines procedures for continuous participant engagement, as well as strategies for capturing the longer-term impacts of the Living Lab approach, including potential spin-offs based on ideas that emerge from the reflexive and creative spaces provided by co-creation activities. Who is the Living Lab guidelines document made for?The Living Lab guidelines document is intended primarily for the teams coordinating and facilitating the six Living Labs of the WoodStock project. It is also useful for project partners and Work Package leaders who intend to mobilise the living labs as a framework to generate relevant outcome that is aligned with their inclusive and participatory research goals. More broadly, these guidelines are a complementary resource to other national, regional and international initiatives and research projects that wish to go beyond conventional methods of knowledge production to harness collective energy in the shaping of the future of our global resource mindful use and protection.
