Trends in the overall incidence of multiple sclerosis among the adult population of the Russian Federation in 2013—2024

With the growing incidence of multiple sclerosis in the Russian Federation, the burden on the healthcare system is increasing. Studying the trends in multiple sclerosis (MS) among the adult population, which is the most active, is crucial for creating a scientifically sound system for providing medical care to MS patients. Objective. The purpose of this study is to examine the overall incidence of multiple sclerosis among the adult population of the Russian Federation from 2013 to 2024. Materials and methods. The analysis of the overall incidence of MS in the adult population of the Russian Federation (RF) and its federal districts for the period from 2013 to 2024 was conducted. Statistical analysis was carried out using the StatTech v. 4.12.2 program (developed by StatTech LLC, Russia). The analysis of time series was performed with the calculation of absolute and relative growth (decline) indicators, the alignment of the time series using the methods of interval enlargement and moving average. Results. When analyzing the dynamics of the overall incidence of multiple sclerosis in the Russian Federation, there was an almost steady increase from 53.6 to 86.5 per 100.000 adult population in all federal districts over the study period. The overall increase in the overall incidence of MS among adults over a 12-year period was 32.9 cases, or +61.4%. The highest growth rate for 2013—2024 was observed in the North-Western Federal District, with a growth rate of 71.8 per 100.000 population, corresponding to a growth rate of +111.3%. The lowest growth rate was observed in the North-Caucasian Federal District, with a growth rate of +23.0%. Conclusion. The increase in the absolute number of MS patients registered in medical institutions, who receive expensive treatment and a range of social support measures, places a significant burden on healthcare. In this regard, research aimed at studying the medical care system in the regions of the Russian Federation, developing primary and secondary prevention measures, and timely diagnosis and treatment of multiple sclerosis becomes particularly relevant.
