Le résumé fourni par la source

Abstract In this study, the cultural components of language as expressed in a psychotherapeutic dialogue meet the phenomenon of nonverbal communication. The meeting takes place in moments of common ground creation in three videotaped transcultural consecutive psychotherapeutic sessions. The analysis of nonverbal communication is often minimised in conversation analytical studies, thus the analysis of the nonverbal communication accompanying such common ground offerings is yet to be examined. Furthermore, the phenomenon of nonverbal communication is brought into a multicultural context, as the dyad in the videotaped sessions has different cultural origins, therefore, using English as a lingua franca. The objective of this study is to identify occurrences of common ground related actions through conversation analysis, by defining and locating them according to their definition, as well as extracting those which relate to the lingua franca communication. The inclusion of the communicative function of (non)-resonant nonverbal behaviour as described in reference to two observer-based methods (NEUROGES, 3RS Manual) in moments of common ground offerings, is discussed as a facilitator of the clinical understanding of establishing a working alliance in a culturally diverse psychotherapeutic setting. Clinical implications of the connection between language and culture in moments of common ground creation are discussed, leading to a better understanding and openness for trans- and cross-cultural psychotherapy.
