Abstract Chapter 2 examines the cultural landscape of Dahshur, contextualizing the pyramid of Senwosret III within the broader necropolis as well as urban zone of Memphis and the Fayum. Starting with the pre-pyramid landscape of Dahshur, the large-scale transformations of the landscape under king Sneferu are discussed as well as its development in the Old and Middle Kingdom. With the construction of the pyramid complex at Dahshur and a rock-cut tomb at Abydos, Senwosret III redefined royal funerary practices. The chapter then traces the construction, use, and abandonment of the pyramid of Senwosret III.
