Abstract Chapter 5 illuminates the process of dismantlement of the pyramid complexes at Dahshur in the Ramesside period. State officials like the ‘royal butlers’ administered the deconstruction of mortuary temples, repurposing the precious building material for other large-scale building projects. At the same time, the owners of these buildings were still acknowledged and revered, showing that this interplay of destruction and commemoration may not have been contradictory at the time. After intense work activity, which must have surrounded the pyramids with an equal amount of noise and dust as at their making, the site was left in ruins. As new tombs and workshops appeared, the cultural landscape was charged with different meanings once again.
