Evaluation and comparison of the quality of nursing notes created by online and offline speech recognition software and handwritten

Documentation is a crucial aspect of nursing practice that directly impacts the quality of patient care. Electronic health records and speech recognition software can enhance this process. This study examines the use of both online and offline speech recognition software for recording nursing notes and compares the quality of the documentation created by the paper method. To conduct this study, two speech recognition software programs(online and offline) were selected and customized. The nurses were then divided into two groups of 35 each, with each group assigned to create the admission nursing notes using one of the three methods under study (the paper method and two types of speech recognition software). After one month, the same notes were recreated using an alternative method. A nursing documentation quality tool developed by the researchers assessed the quality of notes from each method. The results of the study showed that the quality of the notes generated by the speech recognition software (online, with an average score of 70.65, and offline, with an average score of 69.95) was significantly higher than that of the paper method, which had an average score of 59.76. Electronic reports showed higher quality than paper ones, with no significant difference between the two speech recognition systems. Readability and security were the best features of electronic reports. Electronic reporting offers improved quality, especially in readability and security, though further research is needed to compare speech recognition tools and their impact.
