Abstract Britons both created and experienced a crisis between 1830 and 1832 and this chapter evaluates the gains that have been made by foregrounding the events, understandings, and memories of that crisis. It argues that this focus allows us to examine not only the causes and significance of this critical historical episode, but also its meanings to those who lived through it and helped to bring it into being. Finally, it examines the ways in which the reform crisis was consequential in shaping British politics over the long nineteenth century. It was key in the genesis of Conservatism and Chartism and in cementing particular ways of doing politics outside of parliament after 1832. The reform crisis thus came to mark the passage from an old political world.
