Abstract Chapter 6 demonstrates that the life story of a monument does not end with its demolition. The site, as well as the narratives surrounding the person of its builder, have multiple lives. The chapter outlines how Senwosret became Sesostris and later Sesonchosis in the legends of the Hellenistic and Roman world. These textual sources tell a different if complementary story to the archaeological record on site: the pyramid precinct of Senwosret III, already commodified as a resource of building material, also served as a burial ground of local communities and continued in this function into Late Antiquity. The figure of Senwosret also inspired literature and operas in the early modern and modern age, and the sculpture of the king has prompted art historians to develop interpretations which are often diametrically opposed.
