Consumer Behavior and Digital Market Analytics in Online Music Communities: An Aggregated Reddit Dataset

This dataset provides structured, privacy-preserving data for analysing consumer engagement, content preferences, and behavioural patterns in online music communities as a segment of the digital content market. The dataset was derived from 3,252 publicly available Reddit posts published between 25 October 2009 and 31 August 2025. The deposited version contains 433 aggregated observations covering all source records. Each observation represents posts grouped by calendar quarter, online community, post type, and content tone. The dataset includes the following variables: calendar quarter, community name, post type, post tone, number of posts, median and mean numbers of upvotes and comments, median community size, and median duration of authors’ community membership. These indicators can be used as proxies for consumer attention, engagement intensity, content response, community activity, and changes in digital-market behaviour over time. To protect user privacy and reduce re-identification risks, the publicly deposited dataset excludes usernames, author-profile URLs, post URLs, full post texts, exact publication dates and times, free-text flairs, and individual karma indicators. Source groups containing fewer than five posts were pooled before publication. The deposited dataset therefore contains aggregated data rather than individual-level records and does not include a key or linkage table. The dataset is suitable for cloud-based data processing, descriptive and comparative analysis, digital-market analytics, consumer-engagement modelling, trend identification, sentiment-related analysis, and the development of scalable analytical workflows. It may also support research on online communities, digital communication, social media analytics, and consumer behaviour in digital content markets. The data are observational. Upvote counts, comment counts, community membership figures, and account-membership duration reflect the values available during data collection and may subsequently have changed. The post-tone variable is a supplied classification label and should not be interpreted as independently validated ground truth unless used together with the annotation methodology described in the related publication. The repository package includes the aggregated dataset in CSV format, a variable codebook, the processing and anonymisation methodology, a data-quality and privacy report, citation metadata, license information, integrity checksums, and a reproducible Python processing script. The restricted source-level dataset containing user-generated text and online identifiers is intentionally not included.
