Replication Package for: Women Inventors: On the Origins of the Gender Patenting Gap

This replication package contains the patent-level data and code used in “Women Inventors: On the Origins of the Gender Patenting Gap.” The study examines women’s participation in inventive activity in nineteenth-century France and compares patenting patterns by gender. The analytical data are derived from a comprehensive database of patents granted in France between 1791 and 1900, constructed primarily from the patent registers of the French National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) and the Bulletin des Lois. The deposited dataset contains variables describing the application year, patent type, number of additions, number of inventors, whether a patent is linked to at least one woman inventor, gender, technological class, occupational and skill classifications, inventor-team structure, women inventors’ marital status, links to firms, foreign or imported inventions, foreign addresses, and patent quality. The replication materials support analyses of the historical gender patenting gap and differences in collaboration, technological specialization, occupational and skill backgrounds, marital status, firm involvement, foreign connections, and patent quality. The study shows that women patented across a wide range of technological sectors and that women’s patenting activity increased over time, although a persistent gender gap remained throughout the period.
