This article offers an interpretation of Mad Love by Andrzej Żuławski as a creative reworking of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s The Idiot. Its central thesis concerns a shift of primary meanings from metaphysics and morality toward biology and affect. While Żuławski preserves the relational triangle structure of Myshkin–Nastasya–Rogozhin known from Dostoevsky’s novel, he relocates it within the framework of a postmodern reality marked by emotional intensity, contingency, and violence. Particular attention is given to the symbolic reconfiguration of East–West relations, the psychoanalytic dimensions of the characters, and the transformed modes of the female protagonist’s dramatic experience. In this light, Żuławski’s film emerges as a (post)modern revision of Dostoevsky’s novel.
