Scribe at the Door
Résumé fourni par la source
Abstract Chapter 4 focuses on the New Kingdom interaction with the site and deals with the scribes, artists, and officials who visited the pyramid precincts of Dahshur. The pyramid complex of Senwosret III, where more than 300 secondary inscriptions have been recorded, seems to have been particularly attractive to these early ‘tourists’. While artists sought out the iconography on the temple walls as a source of inspiration, scribes left graffiti that blended historical reverence with displays of technical skill. Their activities transformed the pyramid complex of Senwosret III and other mortuary temples of the Memphite necropolis into a dynamic stage for cultural discourse. The chapter thus traces how Egyptian administrators on site reflected on their own king’s reign, turning their inscriptions into early political graffiti.
