Effects of maca (Lepidium meyenii) supplementation on sports performance in amateur runners: A randomized, double-blind, crossover, clinical trial

Introduction Dietary supplementation has been investigated as a possible strategy to improve physical performance in athletes. Preclinical studies suggest that acute supplementation with Maca can be an ergogenic resource in different sports. This study aimed to evaluate the acute effects of maca supplementation on physical performance, body composition, and food intake in amateur runners. Methods This is a randomized, double-blind, crossover clinical trial with runners. Each participant underwent a submaximal test with prior supplementation of maca or placebo, with at least 72 hours of washout. Performance was assessed in different variables, such as test time and distance covered, during a running protocol. In addition, urinary gravimetry and weight analyses were performed to assess variations between placebo and maca. Results The results showed that supplementation with maca did not significantly alter the physical performance (P-value = 0.8048) or hydration parameters of participants compared to the placebo condition (P-value = 0.1369). Conclusions Acute supplementation with maca did not exert an ergogenic effect on physical performance or influence the hydration status of amateur runners. Under the specific conditions of this exploratory trial, acute maca supplementation did not demonstrate a detectable ergogenic effect on physical performance or hydration status in amateur runners.
