Migratory birds contribute significantly to biodiversity through seed dispersal and pollination, suppressing disease reservoirs, and reducing the burden of zoonoses in ecosystems, roles which benefit One Health stakeholders including humans, non-human animals, and the environment. However, bird migration is threatened by a wicked problem: collisions with buildings. This issue occurs globally but is exacerbated by tall buildings with many windows and infrastructure built within migratory paths. Many Indigenous communities actively work to preserve bird populations through collaborations with conservation groups, as they hold cultural significance to these populations. Many grassroots organizations also exist to combat this problem, with the an important contributor being FLAP Canada. This organization developed a novel intervention called Feather Friendly which uses window markers to prevent bird confusion. While these markers have shown great efficiency in preventing bird collisions, challenges in implementation persist. This wicked problem still has many issues due to human habits, such as leaving lights on at night and a lack of laws to protect birds and prevent their collisions with human structures.
