Pearls are produced through a grafting process; however, the complex interactions between the soft tissues, the "mother" oyster shell, and the resulting pearls are not yet fully understood. The criteria for classifying pearl quality depend on the appearance of the outer surface—specifically, the microstructure and composition of the nacre. Consequently, by Laue microdiffraction experiments, deciphering the spatial arrangement, size, and crystallinity of mineral particles within nacreous tablets is essential for a fundamental understanding of nacre's properties. These insights have broad implications, ranging from industrial biomaterial applications to the gemological quality of pearls. Observing these structural developments during shell growth can reveal various physiological changes, the interplay of which ultimately dictates nacre quality.
