Le résumé fourni par la source

Oil spills are a wicked problem best examined using the One Health model, which emphasizes the equality and interconnectedness of humans, non-human animals, and the environment. Oil spills occur during extraction, transport, and storage processes, and their consequences extend beyond immediate contamination to include biodiversity loss, food insecurity, and long-term damage to culturally significant lands and waters. This paper argues that conventional response methods are ineffective and often fail to fully remediate contamination. It also highlights how Indigenous communities are disproportionately affected by oil contamination and pipeline infrastructure, while Indigenous knowledge systems offer important perspectives on sustainability and environmental needs. Drawing on grassroots organizational responses, including the ClearWater Project, the Lokiaka Community Development Centre, and Fungaia Farm, this paper identifies the strengths and limitations of community-led interventions. Particular attention is given to mycoremediation, which uses fungi to break down petroleum hydrocarbons, demonstrating its promise as a regenerative approach. The Fungaia Farm case study demonstrates how mycoremediation can support ecosystem restoration, community education, and Indigenous-led land stewardship. Overall, the paper argues that responding to oil spills requires integrated, collaborative approaches, while recognizing that long-term progress depends on reducing society’s reliance on oil.
