FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS OF GRAMMATICAL MEANS IN ENGLISH INFORMATION STRUCTURE

The information structure of English clauses is shaped at the intersection of syntax, pragmatics, and discourse interpretation. The purpose of the study was to identify the functional load carried by the devices that organize theme-rheme relations, actual division, and communicative focus. The analysis combined historical-comparative reading, hermeneutic interpretation, source-oriented inquiry, and close syntactic examination of the text. Prose samples from literary and academic writing were selected to trace how word order, the distribution of informational weight, cleft and pseudo-cleft constructions, passive voice, and inversion operate as a coordinated system. The results showed that these devices rarely function in isolation: word order separates the message into initial and secondary segments, clefting intensifies the rheme, passive voice pushes the agent to the background while drawing the object closer to the thematic position, and inversion moves the focal element to sentence-initial position and guides reader interpretation. The study therefore demonstrates that English information structure is encoded through a network of grammatical signals rather than through one dominant marker. Its scientific contribution lies in a coherent functional model that explains how these signals are hierarchically distributed across clause organization and how they support meaning management in discourse.
