Effect of Heat Stress and Flooding on Adolescents’ Health, and Nutritional Status, and Service Delivery in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Scoping Review Protocol

Introduction: Sub-Saharan Africa experiences severe exposure to climate-related hazards like extreme heat and flooding, which compound baseline socio-economic vulnerabilities across diverse environments. Despite making up a substantial proportion of the region's population, adolescents undergo a critical developmental period under these conditions while remaining significantly underrepresented in climate-health research. Objectives: This scoping review will identify, map and summarise the nature, extent and distribution of evidence on heat stress and flooding in relation to adolescents’ health, nutritional status and relevant service delivery in sub-Saharan Africa. Method: It will follow the six-stage framework proposed by Arksey and O’Malley, refinements proposed by Levac and colleagues, and current Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidance for scoping reviews. Reporting of the completed review will follow the PRISMA extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). The review stages will comprise protocol development and registration; identification of relevant evidence; record deduplication; title and abstract screening; full-text assessment; piloting and refinement of the data-charting form; data charting and verification; descriptive, thematic and evidence-gap synthesis; consultation with relevant stakeholders; manuscript preparation; and dissemination. The search started on August 28, 2026, with an anticipated completion date of December 20, 2026, and its protocol will be registered on the Open Science Framework (OSF).
