Sustainable port practices and shipping operations at Onne Port, Rivers State, Nigeria: evidence from technology, energy and waste management systems

This study evaluates sustainable port practices and their implications for shipping operations at Onne Port, Rivers State, Nigeria, with particular attention to technology adoption, energy consumption and waste management. A survey research design was used, and primary data were collected through structured questionnaires from 100 purposively selected stakeholders drawn from shipping companies, freight-forwarding firms and shippers. Descriptive statistics were used to examine technology, energy and waste-management practices, while multiple regression tested the relationship between questionnaire-based measures of port revenue, standard of living and sustainable port operations. The findings show that digitalisation remains incomplete: 46% of respondents disagreed that technology had fully replaced manual methods, whereas 31% agreed. Thermal/hydropower and combustible fuel were the dominant reported energy sources, accounting for 44% and 39%, respectively. Landfill and incineration were the principal waste-management methods, representing 44% and 32%, while recycling accounted for only 13%. The regression model was statistically significant, F(2,97) = 51.179, p < .001, with R = 0.717 and R² = 0.513. Port revenue and standard of living were both significant predictors, and the latter showed the stronger standardised association. The study concludes that sustainable port development at Onne Port requires deeper digitalisation, cleaner energy systems, circular-economy-based waste management and stronger integration of economic, environmental and social objectives in port governance.
