From Novelty to Becoming: A Testable Framework for Psychological Transformation, Development, and Flourishing
Résumé fourni par la source
This conceptual bridge paper develops an empirically exposed framework for distinguishing acute altered states, measured psychological change, persistence, person-level reorganisation, development, and flourishing. It connects William James’s pragmatic emphasis on consequences, Terence McKenna’s speculative contrast between habit and novelty, and L. A. Paul’s account of transformative experience with contemporary psychological and psychedelic research. The paper coordinates three components of the Open Research Programme: What Changed?, Who Became?, and Developmental Coherence Theory–Human Flourishing Theory (DCT–HFT). It proposes an eight-stage analytic architecture, a Principle of Progressive Evidential Burden, a Non-Transitivity Principle of Transformation, the Later Encounter evidentiary strategy, and five empirically exposed hypotheses. Psychedelics are treated as a high-information empirical stress test rather than as the foundation of the framework. The paper does not validate McKenna’s Novelty Theory, DCT–HFT, any psychedelic intervention, or any claim that psychological transformation necessarily constitutes beneficial development or flourishing. Its distinctions and hypotheses are offered for criticism, testing, contraction, or rejection. Zenodo Release 0.3 · Final Scholarly Master v1.0 · 4 September 2026.
