Surprises in the sand: A new species of Donacidae (Bivalvia, Tellinoidea) from the east coast of India

The identification of a new species of Donacidae, Deltachion ravenshaw spec. nov., from the Devi estuary intertidal region on the east coast of India is reported. This species is characterized by its unique elongated triangular shape with a pronouncedly pointed anterior end, well-marked flat radial ribs with clear interstices, microscopic commarginal ribs, and a uniformly cancellate posterior area with well-defined radial ribs overridden by commarginal ribs. Comparative analysis with the closely similar taxa Deltachion bruneirufi, D. semisulcatus semisulcatus, and D. semisulcatus semigranosus, highlights unique morphological features, enhancing understanding of diversity within the genus. This discovery adds to the diversity of the Donacidae family and underscores the ecological importance of new marine species findings and habitat inventorisation.
