Dataset of particulate and dissolved primary production measurement from field observations (North Pacific, Indian Ocean) and laboratory culture experiments

This dataset accompanies the submited manuscript by Huang et al. and contains measurements of phytoplankton particulate and dissolved primary production. The field dataset includes particulate primary production (PPP), dissolved primary production (DPP), percentage of phytoplankton extracellular release (PER), and associated environmental variables, including temperature, salinity, nutrients, and size-fractionated chlorophyll a. Observations were collected across the North Pacific, Indian Ocean, and Chinese coastal waters between year 2006 and 2024, with measurements made at multiple depths within the euphotic zone. Both depth-resolved volumetric production rates and euphotic-zone-averaged production rates are provided. Euphotic-zone-averaged production was calculated by dividing the euphotic-zone-integrated production by the corresponding euphotic-zone depth. The dataset also includes controlled laboratory experiments using six representative phytoplankton taxa. These experiments quantify changes in PER across gradients of temperature, irradiance, nutrient availability, and N:P ratio. PPP and DPP in both field and laboratory datasets were determined using ^14C-bicarbonate incubation and subsequent separation of particulate and dissolved fractions.
