Although many planting trials of indigenous tree species have been conducted in the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, most studies have reported results only from the first few years after planting, and little is known about the growth and survival of planted trees after more than 30 years. In this study, we monitored the growth and survival of six dipterocarp species and two other native species over approximately 30 years to examine differences among species and planting methods. The study was conducted in the Chikus Forest Reserve, Perak, Malaysia. In the early 1990s, Acacia plantations and secondary forests were strip-cleared with varying widths to establish five types of planting plots, in which potted seedlings were planted. After about 30 years, the diameter at breast height (DBH) varied among species: Dryobalanops aromatica and Shorea acuminata reached around 60 cm in DBH, whereas Hopea odorata had a DBH of only about 30 cm. A trade-off was observed between growth and survival, with faster-growing species showing lower survival rates. Growth and survival also varied with strip width: plots with the narrowest clearings showed higher survival but slower growth.
