In this blog post I look at the unintended consequences of safety and environmental regulation. It is argued that the public demand for increased safety standards has unintended consequences for the organisation of events, especially for those organised in and by marginalized communities. Financial burdens that safety regulations impose may well lead to the organisation of such events becoming impossible or become so costly that the intended audience cannot afford them. The Amsterdam Kwaku festival is used as an example to highlight this bigger problem connected to the ever increasing demands for safety.
