A green and efficient approach for enhancing the anticorrosive performance of epoxy coatings is presented through the incorporation of plant leaves-extract-functionalized graphene oxide (f-GO) derived from Annona squamosa (An), Moringa oleifera (Mo), Nerium oleander (No), and Ocimum tenuiflorum (Oc), respectively. Uniform dispersion of GO and f-GO within the epoxy matrix was achieved via in situ polymerisation, forming a compact and defect-resistant protective network on mild steel. FE-SEM and density functional theory (DFT) analyses confirmed successful functionalization of GO by phytochemical constituents, resulting in improved interfacial interactions and compatibility with the epoxy matrix. Electrochemical measurements, including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarisation, and open-circuit potential, revealed significantly enhanced corrosion resistance for f-GO-epoxy coatings, evidenced by higher charge-transfer resistance, lower corrosion current density, and more positive corrosion potentials relative to neat epoxy and GO-epoxy systems. After 14 days of immersion in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, the optimised coating exhibited a maximum protection efficiency of 77%. Increased hydrophobicity, reduced blistering in salt spray tests, and improved adhesion strength (up to 3.94 N) further confirmed the superior barrier and mechanical properties. These findings demonstrate that plant-derived functionalization of graphene oxide offers a sustainable and effective strategy for the development of high-performance epoxy-based anticorrosive coatings.
