Activity profiles and their correlates in patients with localised renal and colorectal cancer shortly after treatment: a cross-sectional analysis

Abstract Purpose The purpose of this study is to identify activity profiles and their correlates in patients with localised renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and colorectal cancer (CRC) shortly after treatment completion. Methods In the ReLife ( n = 326 patients with RCC) and EnCoRe ( n = 358 patients with CRC) studies, we measured physical activity and sedentary behaviour at 3 months and 6 weeks after treatment completion using accelerometers. We used latent profile analyses to determine activity profiles. Demographic, lifestyle-related, and clinical correlates were investigated with multinomial regression analyses. Results We identified three activity profiles for both populations: a most sedentary (RCC:28%, CRC:16%), an average (RCC:50%, CRC:53%), and a highly active profile (RCC:22%, CRC:31%). In the most sedentary profile, mean sedentary time was 11.9 h/day for RCC and 13.1 h/day for CRC, while mean physical activity was 72 min/day and 44 min/day, respectively. Correlates of the most sedentary profile were male sex (RCC: odds ratio (OR), 2.18; 95% confidence interval [95%CI], 1.06–4.47), and higher fatigue scores (per 1 point: RCC, 0.98 [0.96–1.00]; CRC, 0.98 [0.96–0.99]). Correlates of the highly active profile were male sex (CRC, 0.38 [0.20–0.71]), higher educational level (RCC, 0.31 [0.14–0.72]; CRC, 0.46 [0.22–0.96]), and higher BMI (per 1 kg/m 2 : RCC, 0.91 [0.84–0.99]; CRC, 0.92 [0.86–0.99]). Conclusions There are distinct activity profiles in patients with RCC and CRC. Male sex, higher education, higher BMI, and lower fatigue score were associated with less favourable profiles. Implications for Cancer Survivors These findings highlight that activity profiles in patients with RCC and CRC are heterogeneous, which should be considered when promoting healthy lifestyles.
