Spring stratification and phytoplankton diversity across five lakes in 2013

This dataset contains coordinated spring phytoplankton observations from five lakes spanning broad gradients in lake morphology, trophic state, latitude, and mixing regime: Annie Lake (USA), Lough Feeagh (Ireland), Lake Geneva (France–Switzerland), Harp Lake (Canada), and Lake Verevi (Estonia). Sampling was conducted during the development of spring thermal stratification in 2013, with sampling periods ranging from approximately 4 to 13 weeks among lakes. Phytoplankton were sampled at three vertically distributed depths selected to characterize contrasting thermal and underwater-light environments. Genus-level phytoplankton cell densities, sampling depth, date, and lake-specific Schmidt stability are provided, together with sample-level phytoplankton richness, Shannon diversity, and Pielou evenness. The dataset also includes associated measurements of chlorophyll a, total phosphorus or soluble reactive phosphorus for Lake Geneva, and Secchi depth. The data were collected as part of a coordinated international sampling effort designed to examine how the development of spring thermal structure influences phytoplankton community composition, diversity, and vertical differentiation. The dataset provides a standardized cross-lake resource for investigating relationships among physical habitat structure, environmental conditions, and plankton community dynamics during seasonal stratification, and can support comparative analyses of phytoplankton and other components of lake ecosystems.
