Review of current methods for the genetic identification of wolf-dog hybrids in Europe and establishment of minimum assessment standards

The Biodiversa+ Wolfness project focuses on exploring, addressing, and enhancing our understanding of human-induced wolf-dog hybridisation in Europe. This is achieved through comprehensive interdisciplinary research on the interbreeding between grey wolves (Canis lupus) and domestic dogs (C. l. familiaris or C. familiaris). Within deliverable D1, we reviewed 44 European studies on wolf-dog hybridisation regarding various technical and analytical tools and criteria, such as genetic markers, reference data/populations, and assignment strategies, to evaluate the diversity of methodological approaches. We highlighted a high variety of approaches among the studies, and discussed some crucial shortcomings for some of the reviewed methods. Due to an obvious lack of a common approach for hybrid identification, we propose some common methodological approaches for future WDH assessments in Europe.
