Through the Cinematic Lens of Magical Realism

This chapter examines magical realism in international cinema as a narrative mode for representing collective trauma, authoritarian repression, and structural violence. Beyond its literary origins, cinematic magical realism becomes a site where myth and memory converge, enabling marginalized histories to be voiced through imaginative yet credible frameworks. Case studies include Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth (2006), Pa. Ranjith's Thangalaan (2024), Ciro Guerra's Embrace of the Serpent (2015), and Emir Kusturica's Time of the Gypsies (1988). These films mobilize the marvellous to bear witness to silenced pasts: from Francoist Spain to colonial India, from Colombian ecocide to Roma exclusion in the Balkans. Interweaving the extraordinary with the everyday, they resist erasure, counter hegemonic narratives, and trace the enduring scars of violence. The chapter concludes by positioning magical realism as a transnational cinematic language for narrating crises of ecology, displacement, and authoritarian resurgence.
