A multibiomarker assessment of the mitigative effects of vitamin C against bifenthrin and tebuconazole toxicity in Ctenopharyngodon idella

Agricultural runoff containing pesticides poses a serious threat to aquatic ecosystems; therefore, evaluating their toxicity and mitigation strategies is crucial for fish health. This study aimed to investigate the acute toxicological impacts of the pyrethroid insecticide bifenthrin (BIF; 0.04 and 0.08 µg/L) and the triazole fungicide tebuconazole (TUB; 32 and 64 µg/L) on grass carp ( Ctenopharyngodon idella ), while assessing the potential ameliorative role of vitamin C (Vit C; 262 µg/L) co-exposure over a 96-hour exposure period. Exposure to BIF and TUB induced marked hematological alterations, characterized by significant reductions ( p < 0.05–0.01) in red blood cell (RBC), hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (HCT), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), along with a substantial increase ( p < 0.05) in white blood cell (WBC) count. Serum biochemical profiles showed significant increases ( p < 0.05–0.01) in urea, creatinine, cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), accompanied by a substantial decrease ( p < 0.05) in total protein and albumin levels. Antioxidant enzyme activities were also suppressed, with catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) showing pronounced reductions ( p < 0.05–0.01) most clearly in BIF 0.08 µg/L and TUB 64 µg/L groups. However, Vit C co-exposure resulted in non-significant ( p > 0.05) differences in several hematological indices, total protein and cholesterol levels, particularly in BIF 0.04 µg/L + Vit C 262 µg/L and TUB 32 µg/L + Vit C 262 µg/L groups, and significant recovery ( p < 0.01) of antioxidant enzymes especially SOD activity, was observed in TUB 32 µg/L + Vit C 262 µg/L group. Furthermore, principal component analysis (PCA) and Pearson correlation matrix confirmed the treatment-specific biomarker separation and significant ( p < 0.05) interrelationships among hemato-biochemical and antioxidant enzyme responses. Findings from this study highlight the potential of integrated biomarkers for ecotoxicological assessment and suggest that Vit C co-exposure may alleviate the pesticide-induced toxicity.
