Le résumé fourni par la source
This note reports how Cyperaceae species support local livelihoods through handicraft production and play a role in spiritual practices in eastern Madagascar. Cyperaceae, with over 5600 accepted species, is the third-largest monocot family after Orchidaceae and Poaceae (POWO 2026 ). Approximately 10% of these species have been documented as having socio-economic value (Simpson and Inglis 2001 ). Historically, Cyperus papyrus L. has been used for papermaking in ancient Egypt (Wiedemann et al. 1983 ). More broadly, Cyperaceae are used worldwide, e.g., for biofuel production (Jones et al. 2016 ), as construction materials in West Africa (Cabañas-Mendoza et al. 2024 ), traditional medicines in Brazil and China (Bezerra and De Oliveira 2023 ; Xue et al. 2023 ), and handicrafts in Indonesia (Rahayu et al. 2024 ). Madagascar is home to over 310 Cyperaceae species (Larridon et al. 2021 , 2024 ; Rasaminirina and Larridon 2023 ; Rasaminirina et al. 2022 ), of which one-third are native to the Central Highlands (Rasaminirina et al. 2026 ). Despite this high species-richness, the socio-economic uses of Cyperaceae in Madagascar remain poorly documented.
