Le résumé fourni par la source
This essay analyzes the psychosocial factors associated with substance use among adolescents in the Dominican Republic. Adolescence is identified as a particularly vulnerable stage due to physical, cognitive, and social changes, during which the search for identity and the need for acceptance may lead to risk-taking behaviors. The essay conceptualizes substance use as a multifactorial phenomenon resulting from the interaction of individual, family, and environmental variables. In the Dominican context, alcohol stands out as the most commonly consumed substance, with an annual prevalence of 63.7% and an average age of initiation of 12.9 years. Particular attention is given to the normalization of substance use in social settings such as “colmadones” and “drinks,” where consumption becomes integrated into everyday life and contributes to a reduced perception of risk among young people. Individual risk factors include low self-esteem, impulsivity, and emotional distress, while at the family level, inadequate supervision and poor communication increase vulnerability. Likewise, peer pressure and poor academic performance are significant determinants in the initiation and continuation of substance use. The essay concludes that prevention efforts should focus on strengthening critical thinking skills and transforming community conditions that facilitate access to drugs.
