Asylum Decision-Makers’ Consideration of Alternative Explanations for Credibility Assessment in Canadian Refugee Status Determination

Asylum decision-making is prone to cognitive bias, and one effective psychological strategy for overcoming cognitive bias is evaluating alternative explanations. However, little is known about how asylum decision-makers apply this strategy in practice. To address this gap in the literature, we will investigate the circumstances under which asylum decision-makers explore alternative explanations when assessing the credibility of asylum claims in a sample of first instance Canadian asylum decisions. This study will help understand the safeguards asylum decision-makers apply to make their decisions fairer and prevent the fatal consequences of wrongful rejections.
