A systematic review on an alarming global public health threat: Candida auris

Introduction: Candida auris (C. auris) is yeast that has attained a great concern in recent years due to its multiple drug resistance. It mainly causes blood stream infections and central nervous system infections. World health organisation has classified this fungus as critical priority pathogen. Recently, cases of infections by the fungus are on rise.Aims and Objectives: Very little knowledge is available about this fungus because it is newly emerging in recent years. So this review is made to alert the clinicians about the characteristics and antifungal resistance pattern of the fungus so that clinicians can improve their ways of managing patients infected by the fungus.Methodology: Multiple databases like PubMed, google scholar, web of science, Medline, Scopus and other platforms were used for gathering data. Search terms used were ‘Candida auris’, ‘emerging pathogen’, ‘multi-drug resistance’, ‘WHO critical priority pathogens’ etc.Conclusion: C. auris is an emerging nosocomial pathogen. It can spread from patient to patient as well as from health care workers to patients. This fungus is increasingly becoming resistant to multiple antifungals so there is a need to develop new antifungals. Appropriate surveillance systems should be developed to prevent infection. Health care workers should follow the hand hygiene techniques. Patients should be kept in an isolated room until the infection is cured.
