Embedding social and behavioural science across and beyond Ebola clinical trials: a critical research priority

The ongoing outbreak of Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda has created an urgent need to evaluate medical countermeasures for an Orthoebolavirus for which no licensed vaccine or approved treatment exists.1 Investigational therapeutics are under evaluation, and candidate vaccines, post-exposure prophylaxis, and new diagnostics are being considered or evaluated.2,3 In Bunia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, the PARTNERS adaptive platform trial is evaluating MBP134 and remdesivir for BVD treatment, and the EBO-PEP trial is evaluating oral obeldesivir as post-exposure prophylaxis for high-risk contacts—highlighting overlapping social, ethical, and operational questions across medical-countermeasure research during the same outbreak.
