Phytotherapy or medical herbalism is as old as civilization, but is a descriptive science that is developing in parallel with modern medicine. This chapter examines the growth, harvesting, storage, and processing of medicinal plants in order to maintain their effectiveness. Considerable importance is placed on selecting suitable sites, proper soil management, optimal utilization of resources in the shortest possible time, efficient utilization of inputs, and proper and precise use of local facilities that promise higher quality and yield of medicinal plants. Advanced processing techniques have promoted the effect of postharvest treatment on the quality of bioactive compounds, which is influenced by process parameters such as drying, extraction, and curing. This chapter further seeks to assimilate benchtop lessons from ancient times with what modernity offers, to better understand the optimal deployment of herbal products in today’s integrative medicine.
